The Self in the Cave

Shvetashvatara Upanishad 3.20

Meaning · English

Finer than fine, vaster than vast, the Self lies hidden in each creature's cave. Free of wanting, one sees that Lord's greatness by the Maker's favor, and sorrow ends.

The Self cannot be pinned to a size. It is finer than the smallest thing and larger than the largest, so neither a microscope nor a map will catch it. It is tucked into a hidden inner hollow in every living creature. The one who sees it is not the one straining hardest, but the one who has stopped grasping. That seeing comes as a gift, a clearing granted by the Maker, and what it brings is the end of grief.

Picture the air inside a closed jar and the open sky outside it. The air in the jar fits in your hand, yet it is the same air that stretches over the whole city. Lifting the lid moves nothing anywhere. The Self in each creature is like that pocket of air: tucked away, and still without an edge.
