Never Born, Never Old
Shvetashvatara Upanishad 3.21
Meaning · English
I know this one: unaging, older than all things, the self of everything, everywhere because it fills all. Those who speak of Brahman call it unborn and always there.
The seer speaks for himself: he knows this, not only from report. What he knows does not grow old, and it was already there before anything began. It is the self of all beings, not one self among many. It reaches every place because it pervades whatever exists, so nothing stands outside it. Those who teach Brahman, the one reality behind the world, say it has no birth and lasts always. Something never born is not produced by time, nature or chance; it comes before them all.
Waves form out on the sea, rise, crest and break on the sand, each with its own start and finish. The water they are made of was not born with any of them and does not end when they flatten. The things of the world are the waves. What the seer knows is the water: in every wave, owned by none, never starting.
