Meaning · English

For those who love me single-mindedly, who are good and level in mind, and who have gone past the intellect to what lies beyond it, the qualities born of merit and fault do not arise. Those who follow the ways I have taught in this manner find welfare and reach my abode, which the knowers call the supreme Brahman.

Krishna is describing a person who has finished the journey. Three words carry it. Ekanta-bhakta: ekanta means one-ended, so a devotee whose love has only one object; bhakti comes from bhaj, to share in. Sama-chitta: a mind (chitta) that is level (sama), not tossed up by praise or down by blame. Guna-dosha: merit and fault, the good and bad marks that actions leave on a person. Krishna tells Uddhava that for such devotees, who are good and have gone past the intellect (buddhi) to what lies beyond it, the qualities born of merit and fault do not arise. The scorekeeping stops. The second half closes the whole teaching. Those who follow the ways Krishna has laid out, which the commentators take to be knowledge, action and devotion, find kshema, welfare or safe keeping, and reach his abode. Krishna says the knowers call that same abode the supreme Brahman. So the three paths, however different at the start, arrive at one place. Uddhava came asking what to do once Krishna is gone. The answer is that the path is already given, it can be walked, and it ends in security rather than in a tally of good and bad deeds.

A child walking home holding a parent's hand does not count the puddles and dry patches on the road. Attention rests on the hand, and the road takes care of itself. The hand is Krishna, and the puddles and dry patches are the marks of merit and fault that no longer gather in a mind held by him.

1. Tonight, before sleep, recall one thing from today that earned praise or blame. Take two minutes. 2. Notice whether the pleasure or sting came from the act itself or from how it looked to others. 3. Tomorrow, do one small helpful thing that nobody will see, and tell no one. Notice what happens to the wish to be noticed. 4. If you love a name or form of God, hold it in mind for one minute afterwards.

A retired schoolteacher puts a large note in the temple box. The trustee thanks her loudly in front of everyone. She feels a warm glow, then catches herself checking who heard. The gift is already half spent on being seen. Krishna's teaching points to a mind that is not keeping this ledger because it is held elsewhere. In her moment, that would go step by step. She sees the glow arise. She sees it belongs to the audience, not to the gift. Her attention goes back to why she gave, which was love, and the ledger of good and bad marks has nothing to feed on. Ordinary experience confirms part of this: deeds done for an audience leave us hungrier for the next round of approval. The limit is plain. The verse does not promise that pride will never rise, that she will stop caring what others think, or that actions carry no consequences in the world. It describes, as Krishna's teaching, where single-minded love ends up, not a state she can force by tonight.
