Asking Nothing, Not Even Freedom

Meaning · English
Krishna says the wise, steady devotees who belong to him alone want nothing at all. Even liberation from rebirth, if he offered it, they would not ask for. The learned call this absence of expectation the highest and greatest good. So devotion to Krishna comes to one who has no wishes and looks for nothing in return.
Three words carry this. Kaivalya is liberation, from kevala, 'only': the soul standing alone, free of rebirth. Nairapekshya is expecting nothing, from apeksha, 'looking toward' a result. Bhakti is loving devotion, from bhaj, 'to share in'. Krishna describes the devotees first. They are sadhu (settled in goodness) and dhira (steady). They are ekantin, meaning their love has a single point, himself. Such people want nothing. He then goes a step further than the verses before it. Even the freedom he could give them, they leave unasked. The commentators read this as the devotee valuing Krishna above his own release. The wise, Krishna says, name this expecting nothing as the highest and fullest good. The last line draws the conclusion. Devotion belongs to the one who has no wishes and looks for nothing from Krishna. Uddhava has just heard that devotion brings everything: heaven, liberation, Krishna's abode. A listener could take that as a method for collecting prizes. Krishna closes that door. The prizes are real, but love that waits for payment is not yet the love he is describing. He asks Uddhava to let his devotion be the thing itself, with no purpose attached.
A friend sits with an old man every evening. When the man's family offers to pay her, she is puzzled and says she comes because she likes his company. The payment would turn the visit into a job. Devotion that asks for nothing, even release, is that kind of visit.
1. Choose one small kind act for today: a call to a relative, a plate of food for a neighbor, a few quiet minutes for your prayer. 2. Do it without telling anyone and without hoping for thanks. 3. Afterward, notice whether you are waiting to be noticed. Don't scold yourself. Just see the waiting. 4. If it is there, say your prayer or the Lord's name once more, with no request in it.
A woman has sat with her ailing neighbor every evening for a month. Tonight she catches herself counting. The family has not thanked her, and she feels a little cheated. The verse speaks to that moment. First, she can see that the counting has started, which is already a small step back from it. Second, she can ask what she came for. If she came for the neighbor, the missing thanks takes nothing from the visit. If she came for praise, she can admit it plainly and go on anyway. Third, she can offer the evening itself, without a price attached. The text teaches that this expecting nothing is the best state of the heart, and it carries that even to liberation. Ordinary experience agrees on one small point: giving with a ledger in mind tends to sour the giver. The verse does not promise that the family will thank her, that the neighbor will recover, or that tiredness will lift. If she is worn out, rest and help are still needed.
