For the yogi who is devoted to me, whose whole self is given to me, neither knowledge nor dispassion is, for the most part, the highest good in this world. Whatever is gained by works, by austerity, by knowledge and dispassion, by yoga, by giving, by righteous duty, and by every other good practice, my devotee gains all of it with ease through devotion to me. Heaven, release, even my own abode: he gains these too, if he should ever happen to want them.

Krishna tells Uddhava that for a person whose heart is given to him, the two great helpers of the spiritual life are not the main thing. Three words carry the teaching. Bhakti is loving devotion, from bhaj, to share in: a relationship, not a technique. Jnana is knowledge, the clear seeing of what is lasting and what is passing. Vairagya is dispassion, the colour gone out of craving. Krishna says that for this devoted person, knowledge and dispassion are not, for the most part, the highest good. The softening words matter. He is not calling them worthless. He is saying the devotee does not have to chase them as separate prizes. Then comes a long list: works, austerity, knowledge, dispassion, yoga, charity, duty, and all other good practices. Whatever any of these can win, Krishna says, the devotee wins through devotion, and easily. The list ends with heaven, release (apavarga, the end of rebirth) and Krishna's own abode. The devotee gets these too, but only if he happens to wish for them. This is taught to answer a practical worry. A person may fear that devotion is the soft path and that the harder disciplines are still owed. Krishna says nothing is left unpaid. What he asks of the listener is to place the weight on love of him, and to stop keeping a ledger of other achievements.

A caretaker of a large old house wears one key that opens every room, while a visitor struggles with a heavy ring of keys, each fitting one door. The single key is devotion. The ring is the separate disciplines, each opening only its own door.

1. Pick one ordinary daily act, such as lighting a lamp, washing your face, or the first cup of tea, and do it today as an offering to Krishna, in silence, for about two minutes. 2. Notice in the evening which of your usual resolutions you dropped, and which you kept without effort. 3. Do one small act of giving today, such as food, a few coins, or a kind word, and name it quietly as his. 4. Before sleep, spend one minute remembering him, and let that stand as the day's whole practice.

A grandmother wakes at five in the kitchen. She keeps a fast on Mondays, reads a few pages, gives to the temple, and feels all of it as a heap of duties she is behind on. Then she sets the water to boil and, for a moment, simply remembers the one she loves. The heap gathers around that remembering. The reading becomes something shared, the giving something offered, and the fast stops feeling like a debt. Krishna's teaching works at this level. Many separate efforts are held together when one love sits at the centre, and the effort that was scattered becomes lighter to carry. Ordinary experience bears this out: a strong attachment to one person or purpose makes many small habits easier to keep. The teaching does not promise that her worries go, that grief or illness will pass, or that heaven or release arrives on any schedule. It is the text's own claim about what devotion holds. It is also no substitute for a doctor where one is needed.
