For the sage who keeps turning to me again and again in the devotion I have described, every longing in the heart falls away, because I am seated in that heart. The knot of the heart comes undone. Every doubt is cut through. His actions wear away, once I, the self of all that is, am seen.
Three words carry the teaching. Bhakti is loving devotion, from bhaj, to share in: it is a shared life with the Lord, and more than praise. Hridaya-granthi is the knot of the heart, the tight tie between the self and the body, mind and wants that it takes for itself. Karmani, here, are the stored results of past actions that keep a person bound. Krishna tells Uddhava that the sage who returns to him again and again, by the devotion Krishna has described, finds that the heart's longings fall away. They go because Krishna is already seated in that heart, and a heart that is occupied stops hunting for things to fill it. Then the knot loosens. Every doubt about what is real and what is oneself is cut through. The weight of past actions wears thin. All of this follows one event: Krishna, the self of everything, is seen. The teaching answers a worry left by the earlier verses. Desire is hard to drop by force, so how does a person actually become free of it? Krishna's reply is that devotion does the work, and effort at renunciation is not the main labour. The commentators read the seeing as direct vision of the Lord as the inner self. What it asks of the listener is steady, repeated turning toward him. A single burst of feeling is not what the verse describes.
A knot pulled tight in wet rope will not yield to picking at it. Once the rope goes slack and a hand holds the loop open, it slides free. The knot is the heart's tie to its own wants, and the loosening is the Lord, seen, filling the place it gripped.
1. Choose one fixed time today, such as just after waking or before the evening meal, and sit for five minutes with the Lord's name or form in mind. 2. Do the same tomorrow and the day after. The verse speaks of turning to him again and again, so repetition matters more than length. 3. Each time a craving rises today, pause for one breath and name the Lord inwardly before deciding what to do. 4. At night, note one want that felt a little lighter than last week.
A taxi driver sits parked outside the airport before dawn. The loan instalment is due, his cousin has just bought a bigger car, and he wonders whether the quiet prayers he keeps up are doing anything at all. Wants and doubts crowd him together. The verse speaks to this in steps. Krishna says the longings fall away because he is already seated in the heart. So the driver need not wrestle each want to the ground. He returns, once more, to the one he turns to each morning. As that return deepens, the grip of the comparing and craving is said to loosen, and doubt about what he is and what matters is said to be cut through. The text gives this as Krishna's teaching about the heart, and it rests on seeing the Lord, beyond what effort at self-control alone achieves. Ordinary experience confirms a small part of this: a person steadied by something loved chases lesser things less hungrily. The verse does not promise the loan will be paid, the cousin's car will matter less by noon, or grief and worry will vanish. It says nothing that replaces work, advice or a doctor where one is needed.
