One in whom faith in the stories of me has been born, who is weary of all action, who knows that desires are made of pain, yet cannot manage to give them up, should then worship me. He should be glad at heart, full of faith, firm in his resolve. And while he still indulges those desires, he should reproach them, knowing that sorrow is what they finally yield.
Krishna describes one particular person. Faith, shraddha, has been born in him through hearing about Krishna. He is tired of action, which is nirveda: weariness, not hatred. He sees that desire, kama, is painful by nature. Yet he cannot drop it. The text calls him anishvara, without the power to renounce. Krishna does not scold him for this. He says that such a person should worship, bhakti, loving devotion, from the root bhaj, to share in. He should do it gladly, trusting, and with a settled mind. Then comes the surprising clause. He may go on enjoying his desires while he condemns them, because he knows their end is sorrow. So he is not asked to pretend he is free, and he is not asked to wait until he is. The honest recognition and the continuing devotion run side by side. Sridhara Svami reads this as the person fit for the path of devotion, not yet fit for the path of knowledge. The reason it is taught here is that the question behind the lesson is what to do when you see the problem but cannot yet act on it. Krishna's answer is to begin from where you stand. What it asks of the listener is plain. Look at desire truthfully, name its cost without hating yourself, and keep turning toward him.
A man has a sore tooth. He knows the sweet will hurt it, and still he eats one, wincing at each bite and saying so. He does not lie about the pain, and he does not wait to be cured before he goes to the dentist. That is the one who sees desire's sorrow, indulges anyway, and keeps turning toward Krishna.
1. Today, pick one habitual pull, such as a snack, a screen or a purchase, and notice it the moment it arises. 2. If you give in, say quietly and without anger what it costs you, as plainly as reading a label. 3. Afterwards, spend five minutes on something that steadies you: a prayer, a verse read aloud, or a name of Krishna repeated. 4. Repeat this each day this week, and see whether the pull and the pause begin to feel different.
A man stands at a shop counter at closing time, about to put a new phone on credit. He has done this before. He remembers the dull feeling the week after, and the bill. The pull is still strong. The verse changes the moment in small steps. He admits the pull without calling himself weak. He recalls, as a plain fact, how it ended last time. Then he chooses, either way, without self-contempt, and afterwards he turns to what actually steadies him. Ordinary experience confirms that the aftertaste of a craving is familiar, and that shame tends to feed the next round of it. Krishna's teaching here is that honest seeing and loving devotion go together, and that one need not wait to be free of desire before beginning. The limit is real. This does not promise that the pull will vanish, or that the purchase will turn out well. Where a craving has grown into something that harms health, money or family, such as drinking, gambling or compulsive spending, a doctor or counsellor is the right person to see alongside any devotion.
