If a yogi, through carelessness, does something condemned, let him burn that fault away by yoga alone, and by nothing else. Steadiness in one's own station is called virtue. By this measure the rule is fixed for acts that are impure by their very kind. Virtue and fault are laid down in this way so that attachments may be given up.

Three words carry the teaching. Yoga, from yuj, to yoke, is the practice of joining the mind to its purpose. Adhikara is one's own station, the work and discipline that belong to one's situation. Nishtha is steadiness, standing firm in that station. Krishna tells Uddhava that if a yogi does something wrong through carelessness, not through intent, the repair is more yoga. Nothing else is needed. He does not send the yogi to a list of penances. Then he defines virtue, guna, as nishtha: keeping steadily to one's own station. Fault, dosha, is the opposite, a loosening of that steadiness. The rule exists mainly for acts that are impure by their nature, so there is a clear line to stay behind. The final clause gives the reason for all this sorting. Virtue and fault are named so that attachments can be given up. The commentators read this as the point of the whole list. Good and bad are marked as a means to freedom from clinging, not as an end. The question behind it is what a practitioner does after a slip, and why scripture keeps drawing such lines. Krishna answers that the slip is mended by returning to practice, and that the lines serve letting go.

A handrail on a staircase. You grip it to climb, and it keeps you steady where the steps are worn. At the top you let go and walk on without it. The lists of virtue and fault are the rail, and the freedom from attachment is the landing.

1. Choose one small duty that is plainly yours, such as washing the dishes, or a fixed ten minutes of practice each morning. 2. Do it at the same time for seven days. 3. When you miss or do it carelessly, say in one plain sentence what happened, and return to it at the next usual time. Skip the apology and skip the extra penalty. 4. At the week's end, notice what the steady duty kept you from reaching for.

A man lies awake after snapping at his elderly father over a spilled cup at dinner. He replays it, and the guilt starts to tell him he is a bad son. The verse speaks to that hour. It separates a careless act from a settled character, and it names the repair as a return to the practice he already keeps. So the next morning he does his usual duty, speaks gently to his father at breakfast, and says plainly that he was short with him. The fault is named once and not rehearsed all night. Ordinary experience agrees that a steady daily habit is easier to resume after a lapse than a vague resolve to be better. The verse does not promise that the sting will vanish, or that his father will not be hurt. It does not replace an apology where one is owed, and it does not replace medical help if the guilt turns heavy and will not lift.
