For a person weary of worldly pursuits, free of craving, and faithful to what the teacher has said, the mind drops its fault by thinking again, and again, over what it has already thought through. The mind is also made fit by the disciplines that begin with restraint, by the paths of yoga, by the science of inquiry, or by worship and service of me. By nothing else should it be brought to remember what suits it.
Krishna tells Uddhava who this works for and what it works with. The person is nirvinna, weary: worldly pursuits have lost their taste for him. He is also virakta, with the colour gone out of craving. And he holds to what his teacher has said. Such a person's mind lets go of daurAtmya, its bad habit of running after what harms it. Krishna names the way: anucinta, thinking again over what has already been thought. One understanding, turned over many times, wears the fault down. Then he lists four supports. Yama and the other disciplines are restraint practised in daily conduct. Yoga paths are the steady work of gathering the mind. Anvikshiki is inquiry, careful reasoning about what is lasting and what is not. Worship of Krishna is the fourth, and it includes service near him. The last line closes the door on shortcuts: nothing outside these brings the mind to remember what suits it. This answers Uddhava's worry about a mind that knows better and still slips. Krishna's reply is that knowing once is not enough. It asks for patient return, through whichever of the four fits the person.
A pot blackened with soot is not cleaned by one stroke. Someone scrubs it again and again, with ash one day, sand or soap another, until the metal shows. The soot is the mind's old fault. The repeated scrubbing is thinking over the same understanding. The different scourers are the four means.
1. Pick one thing you already know is bad for you to dwell on, such as a grudge or an urge to check your phone. 2. Tonight, for five minutes, write down why it harms you, in your own plain words. 3. Tomorrow and the day after, read that page again and add one sentence only if you have learned something. 4. Each time the old pull comes this week, notice it, and recall one line from the page.
A man lies awake after a family wedding, replaying the sharp thing he said to his brother. Each replay makes him feel worse and teaches him nothing. This is circling, and it is not what the verse describes. Krishna's reflection goes back over a conclusion already reached, and it grows steadier with each pass. So the man would ask a plain question once: what did I see about myself in that remark? He would settle his answer, perhaps that he speaks sharply when he feels overlooked. Then, when the scene returns at two in the morning, he would go back to that answer and not the scene. Ordinary experience confirms that a lesson held in mind is easier to find again when tired than a lesson only half noticed. Repeating a thought deliberately is also different from ruminating, and most people can feel the difference. What the verse does not promise is that the words will be unsaid, that the brother will forgive, or that sleeplessness which continues for weeks needs nothing more than reflection. A doctor should see that.
