Meaning · English

This is called the highest yoga: the gathering in of the mind. Seeking to know its heart, one trains it again and again, as a spirited horse is trained. By reasoned reflection, taking all things in reverse order and in forward order, one should contemplate their coming into being and their dissolving, until the mind grows clear and calm.

Three words carry the teaching. Yoga is yoking, a joining of what runs loose. Sangraha is gathering in, the way a driver gathers the reins. Prasidati is what settles and turns clear, like water after the mud sinks. Krishna tells Uddhava that this gathering of the mind is the highest yoga. He adds how it is done. The trainer of a spirited horse does not beat it. He learns its temper, what frightens it and where it bolts, and he works with it daily. So Krishna asks Uddhava to seek the heart of his own mind: its habits, its fears, its pulls. Then comes a second practice. Krishna calls it sankhya, which here means reasoned reflection on the makeup of things. Uddhava is to take everything that exists and trace it forward, from its origin to what it becomes, and backward, from what it is to what it dissolves into. Sridhara Svami reads this as a steadying of the mind through seeing how things arise and pass. The practice goes on until the mind is clear. Krishna teaches it here because the paths of knowledge, action and devotion all fail if the mind keeps bolting. He asks for patience and repetition, not force, and for a mind that is known before it is commanded.

A jar of river water has been shaken, and it is brown with silt. Set on a shelf and left alone, it clears from the top down, grain by grain. The jar is the mind, the silt is its restless thoughts, and watching things settle in their own order is what clears it.

1. Tonight, sit for five minutes before sleep with no phone and no book. 2. Notice where the mind runs first: a worry, a person, a plan. Name it quietly, without arguing. 3. Pick one thing from your day, such as a quarrel or a purchase. Trace it back to how it began, then forward to where it will probably end. 4. When the mind wanders, bring it back gently. Repeat on the following nights and notice which thoughts return most often.

A woman sits in a clinic corridor waiting for test results. Her mind gallops through the worst outcomes, then to money, then to who will tell her mother. Ordinary experience confirms that a mind left to run alone grows faster and louder, especially when she is tired and afraid. The verse would change the moment in steps. First she notices where the mind is running and what it fears, instead of fighting it. Then she brings it back, gently and repeatedly, as a patient trainer would. Then she looks at the fear itself: how it arose, what it rests on, and how every worry of this kind rises and passes. The text teaches that this continues until the mind clears. It does not promise that the results will be good, that fear will not come, or that grief will be spared. It is also no substitute for the doctor she is waiting to see, or for the care of people around her if the fear becomes too heavy to carry alone.
