Leading the Wandering Mind

Bhagavata Purana 11.20.18

When a person has grown weary of fresh undertakings, has no craving left, and keeps the senses in check, let that yogi hold the mind steady by practice. If the mind, while being held, strays or will not settle, let him bring it under his own rule by a gentle, yielding way, without drowsiness. He should not let the mind's movement go unwatched. With breath and senses mastered, and with an understanding full of clarity, let him bring the mind under the self's rule.

Krishna gives Uddhava three key words. Abhyasa is practice: the root means to place oneself toward something again and again, so it is a returning, not one great effort. Virakta is dispassion, the colour gone out of craving. Sattva is clarity, the quality of a mind that is calm and bright, like water with the mud settled. First comes the one who is ready: weary of starting project after project, no longer pulled by wanting, senses held in. Krishna says that person holds the mind steady by repeated practice. Then he admits the mind will stray anyway, even while held. His answer is not force. The mind is led back by a yielding way, going along with it for a step and turning it gently, and the one doing this stays awake and does not doze. The last part says not to ignore where the mind goes. Its movement has to be watched, with breath and senses already mastered, and with a clear understanding doing the leading. The commentators generally read the yielding way as skilful means, not a fight. Krishna teaches this because the paths of knowledge, action and devotion all need a mind that can stay put. He asks Uddhava for patience, wakefulness and a clear head, and he asks nothing harsher.

A man walks a young dog on a lead. It lunges toward a squirrel, and he does not yank or shout. He walks on, calls it round, and turns it back to the path, again and again. The dog is the mind, the lead is practice, and the patient turning is the yielding way.

1. Pick one ordinary task today, such as drinking tea or washing a pan, and give it five minutes of your full attention. 2. Each time you notice your thoughts have run off, say 'back' quietly and return, without any scolding. 3. Count the returns and do not count the straying as failure. Each return is the practice. 4. If you feel sleepy, sit up, open your eyes wide, and breathe slowly for a minute.

A woman lies awake at two in the morning, replaying the quarrel with her brother and rehearsing what she will say tomorrow. Her mind has run off, and each time she drags it back with a snap, it runs again. Krishna's advice would change the night in steps. She would first notice that the mind has gone and where it went. She would then lead it back by a gentler route, such as slowing her breath and settling on one plain, kind thought about her brother, with no argument in it. When it strays again she would repeat this without anger, and keep herself awake enough to notice. Ordinary experience bears out two points. Tiredness weakens restraint, and scolding yourself for a restless mind tends to make it more restless. Slow breathing also quiets the body in a way most people can feel. The teaching does not promise that the quarrel will be resolved, that sleep will come, or that long-standing worry or low mood will lift. Persistent sleeplessness or distress is a matter for a doctor.
