Meaning · English
This human body, the foremost boat, easy to get and hard to get, well built, with the teacher at the helm. Driven by the wind of my favor, one who does not cross the ocean of birth is a killer of his own self.
Krishna tells Uddhava that the human body is a boat, and he lists what the boat has. Two words sit side by side: sulabha, easy to get, and durlabha, hard to get. It is easy because it comes without being bargained for. It is hard because it is rare, and nothing guarantees another. Adya means first or foremost: the body is the chief vessel for crossing. Sukalpa means well fitted. This boat has what a crossing needs: a mind that can ask questions, hands that can act, and time to do both. Then come the other two parts. The karnadhara is the helmsman, the one who holds the steering oar. Krishna names the guru in that place. The boat has a favoring wind, which he calls his own, sent to suit the traveller. The last line is stern. A person with the boat, the helmsman and the wind who still does not cross is atmaha, a killer of the self. Krishna does not mean violence. He means the loss of the one chance that was given. Krishna teaches this because the earlier verses show life running out, and Uddhava needs to know that something in his hands can be used. The verse asks the listener to see the whole set as already given.
A ferry sits tied at a river bank. The hull is sound, the ferryman stands at the oar, and a steady breeze blows toward the far shore. A man sits on the bank, watching it, and the ferry leaves empty. The ferry is the body, the ferryman is the teacher, the breeze is Krishna's favor.
1. Tonight, sit for five minutes and list what you already have for the crossing: a working body, someone who has taught you something true, a moment of quiet like this one. 2. Name one teacher, living or not, whose words have steadied you. Write down one sentence of theirs. 3. Tomorrow morning, before your phone, spend two minutes doing the one thing that sentence asks. 4. Tomorrow night, note whether you did it. Do not judge. Just note.
A man of sixty-two sits in a hospital corridor while his brother is in surgery. For years he has meant to sit quietly each morning and never did. Now the plastic chair, the clock and his own breathing are all there is. The verse speaks to that moment in steps. First it says the body that sits here is a rare thing, not a given. Second, it says he is not steering alone: someone taught him something once, and he can recall it. Third, it asks him to take one small action rather than only worry. So he closes his eyes for a minute and repeats the one line a teacher gave him. Ordinary experience agrees that a scare makes people notice what they have been postponing. The verse does not promise that his brother will recover, or that the minute of quiet will calm him. It does not replace the surgeon or the doctors. It offers a direction for the hours, and Krishna's claim about favor and crossing is his own teaching, given as such.
