Meaning · English

A bird has built its nest in a tree. When the cutters come to fell it, the bird gives up its home without craving and flies to safety. In the same way, a person sees that days and nights are cutting down the span of life, and trembles with fear. Free of clinging, having understood the Supreme, that person stops striving and comes to peace.

Four words carry it. Alampata means without craving: lampata is a craver, so the bird is one who leaves without looking back. Sanga is clinging, the mind sticking to things, and muktasanga is one set free of it. NirIha means without restless striving, the grasping and securing gone quiet. Upasamyati means comes to rest, the way a flame settles when the wind drops. Krishna gives two pictures. In the first, woodcutters are at work on a tree where a bird has its nest. The bird does not mourn the nest or argue with the axe. It flies to safety. In the second, days and nights are the cutters, and each one takes a little from the length of a life. A person who sees this trembles. Krishna does not call the fear a fault. It is the fitting response to what has been seen. But he does not leave the person trembling. One who has loosened clinging and understood the Supreme stops striving and finds peace. Krishna is telling Uddhava that the human body is a chance with a limit, so the limit should be seen early. The commentators read the fear as the push and the understanding of the Supreme as the place to land. What Krishna asks of Uddhava is to treat passing time as real notice, and to hold the nest lightly.

A tenant knows the lease ends on the thirtieth. One who packs a little each evening, giving away what will not be carried, walks out calmly on the last day. One who ignores the date is still shouting at the landlord that morning. The lease is a life, and the packing is loosening clinging.

1. Tonight, take five minutes and name one thing you keep gripping, such as a grudge, a pile of possessions or a worry about status. 2. Ask whether you could carry it out of the house on your last day. If not, loosen one finger's worth of it: return something, make a call, or drop the argument. 3. Notice any small fear that comes up. Let it stay without hurrying to cover it. 4. Repeat once this week with a different thing.

A retired railway clerk has until Friday to vacate his quarters. Forty years of files, utensils and calendars sit in boxes. His hands shake as he lifts the first one, and he feels he is being cut away from his own life. The verse speaks to that morning in steps. First, the trembling is allowed. Krishna names it as the proper reaction to seeing time cut down, so he need not be ashamed of it. Second, the bird is not stripped of everything. It leaves, but it flies somewhere. He asks what he is moving toward, not only what he is losing. Third, the clinging is sorted. Most of the boxes hold nothing he will miss, and a few things he will carry gladly. Fourth, the striving to hold on drops, and the day is spent in quiet work rather than argument. Ordinary experience agrees that a deadline shows what matters. The verse does not promise the leaving will be painless, and it does not remove grief. If the fear turns to sleeplessness or dread that will not lift, a doctor is the right person to see.
