A discerning person does not long for a heaven to go to, or a hell, or even for this world, because absorption in the body makes a person careless. Knowing this, let him strive, before death comes, for an end to rebirth. A careful person who has understood this finds that even this mortal body can bring the goal to completion.
Krishna tells Uddhava that the wise do not crave heaven, and they do not fear hell as a place to be argued over. They do not even cling to this world. All three pull the mind outward. The reason he gives is one word, pramada, carelessness, a drowsy heedlessness, like being slightly drunk. It comes from dehavesha, being absorbed in the body: living as if it were the whole of oneself and the whole of the point. A person in that state spends the days on comfort and loses sight of why the days were given. So Krishna says to act before death comes. The aim he names is abhava, literally not-becoming, an end to the round of rebirth. Then comes the turn. Anyone who sees this carefully, apramatta, will find that this mortal body is arthasiddhida, the giver of what one came for. The body is not the enemy. The same body that makes people careless is the only place where the work can be done, and the commentators read the verse that way. Krishna is answering a worry about whether higher worlds are the prize. They are not. He asks Uddhava to treat the body as a tool and to stay awake while he has it.
A student in an exam hall has three hours. One spends them admiring the polished desk, adjusting the chair, enjoying the fan. The desk is the body and its comforts. The paper is the one task the hours were given for. The desk is needed, but it is not the paper.
1. Tonight, before sleep, sit for two minutes and ask: where did carelessness show up today, in a comfort I reached for without choosing it? 2. Name one thing you did with the body today that served something larger than ease, even a small one. Notice it. 3. Tomorrow, pick one routine comfort, such as the phone in bed or a third cup of tea, and pause for ten breaths before taking it. Notice what you wanted.
A man in his fifties sits in a clinic car park after a health scare. The results came back mild. Already he is thinking he can go back to his old routine, the late dinners and skipped walks, because the body has let him off. That is the moment the verse speaks to. Krishna's teaching is that being comfortable in the body breeds carelessness, and that the body is also the instrument the work is done with. So the man's relief becomes a question. What is this body for, and what has he been putting off while it held up? Step by step, he stops treating the reprieve as permission and treats it as time. He looks after the body as a tool, without worshipping it or neglecting it. Ordinary experience agrees on one point: ease dulls attention, and a scare sharpens it. The verse does not promise that the results will stay good, or that illness will not come. It is not a substitute for the doctor's advice, which he still needs to follow.
