Why Heaven Envies Earth

Bhagavata Purana 11.20.11

Meaning · English

Living in this world, standing in his own duty, free of fault and clean in conduct, a person comes by chance to clear knowledge, or to devotion to me. Even those in heaven, and those in the hells, long for this world of humans. For here both knowledge and devotion can be brought to completion. That other realm does not complete either one.

Krishna tells Uddhava why human life on earth is rare. Three words carry it. Svadharma is one's own duty: dharma comes from dhri, to hold up, and sva means own, so it is the work that holds one's life in place. Yadricchaya means by chance, as it happens, unplanned. It echoes verse 11.20.7, where faith in Krishna's stories wakes unforced. Sadhaka comes from sadh, to accomplish, so it means what brings a thing to completion. Krishna says a person here who keeps to his own duty, stays blameless and keeps clean may, as it happens, receive clear knowledge or devotion to Krishna. Then he says that even beings in heaven and in the hells long for this world. The reason is plain. Heaven and hell are places where earlier deeds bear fruit, whether sweet or bitter. Here a person can still choose, learn and love. Only the human world completes both knowledge and devotion. The other realms complete neither. Uddhava has begged to follow Krishna out of the world, and he is told that the place he wants to leave is the one gods envy. It asks the listener to count this life as the working ground, not as waiting time.

A granary is full after harvest, and a field is still bare in sowing season. Nobody can plant in the granary, however rich it is. Heaven and hell are like the granary, where stored results are used up. Earth is the open field, where seed can still go in.

1. This evening, sit for five minutes and list three things you did today that only a living, choosing person could do: a kind word, a task finished honestly, a moment of attention. 2. Pick the one you did most carelessly. Tomorrow, do that same thing slowly and cleanly. 3. Before sleep, say or read one line about God that you already love, and notice how it feels to have the time to do so.

A man walks slowly round the park on his first morning home after a heart scare. His doctor has told him to rest and to come back in a month. He notices the dog walkers, the wet grass, his own breathing. Things he hurried past for years now look like gifts. Krishna's teaching meets him at that point. This life is not a waiting room. It is the one place where he can still choose how to live, and the heaven and hell of the text are shown as places with no such choice. The man's steps might be small. He keeps his work honest, keeps his habits clean, and finds a quiet hour for what he loves most. Ordinary experience confirms that a narrow margin sharpens attention. The teaching does not promise the scare will not return, and it does not ease his fear on its own. Follow-up visits and medicines stay in the doctor's hands. It only says that the days he has are worth using well.
