As long as a person has not grown weary of actions, or until faith has been born in hearing my stories, so long let him go on doing what is his to do. Standing in his own duty, worshipping through sacrifices, wanting nothing in return, Uddhava, he goes neither to heaven nor to hell, so long as he does not act in any other way.

Krishna sets two limits on how long action should continue. The first is nirveda, weariness or disenchantment: the state where action has lost its pull. The second is shraddha, faith, the settled trust that makes hearing about Krishna (katha, his stories) a delight and not a chore. Until one of these arrives, Krishna tells Uddhava, the person keeps doing karma, meaning the actions that belong to his place in life. He does not drop them early because they feel dull or because he has heard that something higher exists. The second half describes how to do them. Svadharma is one's own duty, the work that falls to one by one's station. Yajna is worship through offering. Anashih-kama means wanting no payoff from it. Done this way, Krishna says, the person falls into neither heaven nor hell. He is not chasing a reward and is not committing the faults that bring a fall. The closing condition matters: he must not act otherwise, meaning he must not step outside what is right. The commentators read the whole as guidance for the one the earlier verses call full of desire. It answers an honest question: what should someone do who feels neither done with the world nor drawn to devotion yet? Krishna's answer is to keep doing duty cleanly, and wait for one of the two to ripen.

A farmer carries water to his rows every evening while the monsoon is late. He does not dig the field up because the carrying is tiresome, and he does not claim a harvest for it. The watering is duty kept up cleanly, and the rain that finally comes is faith, or weariness with the world, arriving on its own.

1. Pick one duty you have been resenting, such as a household task, a work chore, or a call to a relative. 2. Do it today at its usual hour, completely, without hurrying or doing it badly on purpose. 3. While doing it, drop the wish for thanks or credit. Notice, for a minute afterwards, whether the wish was there. 4. Before sleep, spend five minutes listening to or reading a story of Krishna, and notice whether any interest arises.

A woman has spent three weeks caring for her bedridden father, and tonight, at the sink, she thinks of quitting everything: the care, the routine, even her patience. The verse speaks to that hour. It does not ask her to feel higher or lighter. It tells her to keep to the duty in front of her, to do it without bargaining for gratitude, and to avoid doing anything wrong in her exhaustion, such as lashing out or neglecting his medicines. She can let the wish for a reward go quietly and give the evening's task its full attention. Ordinary experience confirms that tired people are tempted to give up on what matters most and take shortcuts that cost them later. The verse offers a plain rule for such a night: carry on, keep the work clean, and wait for faith or settled calm to come in its own time. It does not promise that the exhaustion will lift or that her father will recover, and it does not replace rest, help from others, or a doctor's advice for either of them.
