Meaning · English

For those who have tired of worldly pursuits and set action aside, there is the yoga of knowledge. For those not yet tired of them, whose minds still hold desires, there is the yoga of action. But the person who, by some chance, has come to faith in hearing my stories and the rest, who is neither wearied of the world nor too attached to it, is the one for whom the yoga of devotion brings fulfilment.

Krishna sorts people by where their hearts are, and the sorting rests on three words. Nirveda is weariness with the world: the taste of results has gone flat. Karma is action, the ordinary duties and rites of life. Bhakti is loving devotion, from bhaj, to share in. Each of the three yogas is the discipline that suits one condition. First, those who are truly weary of worldly pursuits and have renounced them are given the yoga of knowledge. Second, those who are not weary, whose minds still hold wants, are given the yoga of action. Third comes a different case. A person has, by chance or good luck, found faith in hearing about Krishna. That person is neither worn out by the world nor stuck fast in it. Devotion is the yoga that brings such a person fulfilment. The reason is in the question Uddhava raised just before. If the scriptures seem to say different things, which instruction is for whom? Krishna answers that the fit matters more than the rank. Wanting what you do not feel yet only makes a person pretend. The commentators generally read the verse as a sorting by readiness. It asks the listener to notice honestly which of the three conditions is theirs.

In a shoe shop, the best pair on the shelf is useless if it does not fit your foot. A tight shoe and a loose shoe both cause blisters. The three yogas are the three sizes, and the foot is the state of your own heart today.

1. Tonight, sit for five minutes with a pen and paper. 2. Write one line answering: am I tired of the things I chase, still hungry for them, or somewhere in between? 3. Next to it, write one small act that fits that answer, such as doing a duty well, sitting quietly, or listening to a story or hymn about Krishna. 4. Do that act tomorrow for ten minutes and note whether it felt natural or forced.

A woman in her forties sits at the kitchen table after closing her bakery for the night. She has half decided to sell it. Her sister says she is only tired. A friend says she should do something more meaningful. She cannot tell which of them is right. The verse would slow her down. First she asks whether she is weary of the whole business or only of this week. If the old wants still pull at her, such as the new oven or the second shop, then Krishna's teaching points her toward doing the work well. If the pull has really gone, that is a different state. If neither is true and something quiet draws her toward hearing and remembering Krishna, that is the third case. She stops borrowing someone else's answer. Ordinary experience confirms that tiredness can pass for disenchantment, and one good night's sleep sometimes shows which it was. The verse does not settle her finances or her health, and it does not say her choice will be painless.
