Meaning · English

Three paths I have taught, wishing to set out the good for human beings: knowledge, action and devotion. Apart from these, there is no other means anywhere.

Krishna tells Uddhava that he has taught three yogas. Yoga here means a way of joining, from yuj, to yoke, so each is a path that joins a person to the goal. Jnana is knowledge, from jna, to know: seeing clearly what is lasting and what is passing. Karma is action, from kri, to do: work and duty done as the tradition lays them down. Bhakti is loving devotion, from bhaj, to share in: taking part in the one you love. The goal is shreyas, the good that lasts, as opposed to what is only pleasant for a while. Krishna gives his reason in the first half of the verse: he taught these out of a wish to arrange the good of human beings. The second half closes the list. In his teaching, there is no fourth means anywhere, at any time. This answers Uddhava's worry that the Veda's rules of right and wrong leave no way to the highest good. Krishna says the way exists and is threefold. The commentators read the next verses as matching each path to a kind of person. This verse asks the listener only to take the number seriously: three, and no fourth.

A hill village is reached by three footpaths. One climbs steep and bare, one winds through fields where people work, one follows a stream with singing. Cliffs close off every other side. The paths are knowledge, action and devotion, each reaching the same village, and the cliffs are the teaching that no other way is offered.

1. Tonight, sit for five minutes with a cup of tea and ask which of three things steadies you most when life is hard: understanding it, doing something about it, or turning to someone you trust and love. 2. Write that one word on a slip of paper. 3. Tomorrow, notice when you reach for it without being asked. 4. Keep the slip in a pocket for the week, and add a second word only if one truly shows itself.

A man of forty-eight has been laid off. He sits in his parked car outside the house, unable to go in and say it. Relatives have already offered three answers: think it through, keep busy, and trust that it will be taken care of. Krishna's teaching of three paths and no fourth gives him a way to sort this advice. He does not have to defend one against the others. He can ask which kind of steadiness he is actually capable of tonight. If it is clear thinking, he writes down what he knows and what he does not. If it is action, he sends two applications before dinner. If it is trust, he sits quietly with what he holds dear before going inside. The text offers these as three honest ways, and a person can begin with the one nearest to hand. It does not promise a job, and it does not take away the fear of telling his family. Ordinary experience confirms only that people steady themselves in different ways.
