For ancestors, for gods and for human beings, the Veda is the eye, Lord. It shows the real good, and the means and the end, where nothing else can reach. Seeing one thing as merit and another as fault does not arise of itself. It comes to us from your Veda. Yet by that same Veda the difference is taken away again. This is my confusion.
Uddhava calls the Veda an eye, cakshus. An eye shows what the other senses cannot. He says the Veda does this for ancestors, gods and humans alike, about the real good (shreyas) and about means and ends: what to aim at, and how to get there. Some things cannot be learned by looking or reasoning, and for these he says the Veda is the one source. Next he says that seeing things as merit (guna) or fault (dosha) is not natural. A person does not simply find it in the world. It is taught by the Veda. Then he states the trouble. The same Veda that teaches the difference also dissolves it. It commands and forbids, and elsewhere it says the distinction does not finally hold. He calls this bhrama, confusion, a mind going round in circles. He says this because he is asking Krishna a real question. If the guide itself seems to contradict itself, how is a person to walk? He does not accuse the Veda of error. He admits he cannot hold both sides together, and he asks for help. The text asks the listener to be honest about the puzzle and not hurry past it, since Krishna is about to answer it.
A traveller follows a signpost that says 'Take the left road'. A few miles on, the same post says 'All roads meet at the town'. He stands at the fork, trusting the post, unsure which of its two sayings to act on. The post is the Veda, and the fork is Uddhava's confusion.
1. Tonight, take one instruction you were taught, such as a fast, a prayer hour or a small restraint. Write it on paper in one line. 2. Under it, write what you were told it is for. 3. Write one question about it that still puzzles you. Do not answer it. Keep the page where you will see it. 4. For one week, notice whether the puzzle makes you drop the practice, or ask better questions while keeping it.
A daughter stands in her grandmother's kitchen on a fasting day, holding a plate. Her grandmother says the fast must be kept exactly. Her uncle says God cares only for the heart. Both claim to speak from the same tradition, and she feels foolish for not knowing which is right. Uddhava's words change what she does next, step by step. First, she can see that being puzzled is not failing. A devoted man who trusted the Veda fully said so openly to Krishna. Second, she can notice that her sense of what counts as right was handed to her by someone, and that most people are in the same position. Third, she can ask the question aloud, as Uddhava did, instead of choosing a side in anger. The verse does not settle whether she eats or fasts. It does not tell her which relative is right. Ordinary experience does show that we trust maps of places we have never been, and feel lost when two maps disagree. The text offers an honest way to be lost, not a way out.
