Meaning · English
One whose nature is free from the ego of being the doer, and whose intellect is not attached, even having slain these living beings, does not kill, and is not bound by the act.
Three terms carry the verse. Ahankara is the sense of "I" that claims an action as its own; here the text says the person is free from the ego of being the doer. Buddhi is the intellect, the part that judges and decides. Lipyate means to be smeared or stained, as ink stains cloth. Krishna tells Arjuna that a person whose inner nature has dropped the claim "I am the one doing this", and whose intellect is not stained by attachment to the result, may act, even slay, and yet does not kill and is not bound. The reason comes from the verses just before: an action has five factors behind it, and the one who sees only the self as doer sees wrongly. Bondage, in this teaching, comes from the claiming and the clinging, not from the movement of the hands alone. For Arjuna, who fears the sin of killing kinsmen, this answers the problem directly. It asks the listener to look at where the "I did it" sits inside an act, and at what the mind is holding on to. Shankara reads the verse as the knower of the self, who sees the self as actionless. Ramanuja reads it as one who knows the self as separate from the body and acts as service to the Lord. Madhva reads it as acting in dependence on God, who is the real doer.
A boatman on a river poles his raft across, and the water parts and closes behind him. The wood of the pole is wet but holds nothing of the river afterward. The hands do the work, the current carries them, and the pole is dried by the sun. Acting is the pole in the water; the ego's claim and the clinging are what would make it stick.
1. Pick one task today that you usually take personal credit or blame for, such as cooking a meal or finishing a report. 2. While doing it, notice the thought "I am the one doing this" and see how many other things are helping: your hands, the ingredients, other people, the day itself. 3. When it is done, take one minute to let go of the result before you speak about it. Notice whether the pride or worry settles a little.
A paramedic has just handed a patient over at the hospital doors. The man did not survive the ride. She replays every choice she made on the road. The verse would change the replay in steps. First she would separate what her hands did from what the situation decided: the road, the hour, the illness, the team. Then she would ask what in her mind is still gripping the outcome, the verdict on herself. Krishna's teaching is that action done without the claim of being its sole author, and without clinging to its fruit, does not bind. She would still do her work with care and answer for her actions honestly. Ordinary experience does confirm that people who tie their whole worth to every result carry outcomes home with them, while those who hold their role lightly recover more easily. The verse does not promise that she will feel no grief for the patient, and it does not excuse carelessness or replace talking to a counsellor or doctor if the weight stays. It speaks of how an act is held, not of whether it matters.
