The Blind Spot of Sole Authorship

Bhagavad Gita 18.16

Meaning · English

That being so, whoever sees the soul alone as the doer, with an unrefined intellect, does not truly see. That person is foolish.

Three words carry the verse. Kartar means the doer, the one who acts. Atman is the soul, the self. Akrita-buddhi means an intellect not yet refined or trained: akrita is 'unmade', buddhi is the faculty that discerns. Krishna has just listed the factors behind any act: the body, the doer, the senses, the many efforts, and Providence. Now he says what follows from that list. Someone who looks at all of it and still names the soul alone as the doer has not seen clearly. 'In spite of this' is the sting. The facts are on the table and the person still counts only one cause. Krishna gives the reason plainly: the intellect is unrefined, so it cannot take in the whole picture, and he calls that person durmati, of poor understanding. He is not scolding. He is describing a blind spot. Shankara reads the 'doer' claim as a mistaken identification of the changeless self with action, which belongs to the body and mind. Ramanuja holds that the soul does act, but only with the Lord's support and permission. Madhva stresses the dependence of the soul's action on God's will. The verse asks the listener to see an act as many causes working together, and to stop claiming it all.

A farmer points at a field of ripe wheat and says, 'I grew that.' Yet there was the soil, the rain, the seed, the ox and plough, and a season that held. He did one part. The wheat is the work of all of them together, as any act is.

1. Tonight, pick one thing you did well today, a meal, a repair, a hard conversation. 2. Spend two minutes listing everything that had to be in place for it: your body that day, the tools, people who taught you, luck in timing. 3. Notice whether the feeling of 'I did this' loosens or stays the same. 4. Do the same with one thing that went badly, and see what else was involved besides you.

A nurse finishes a double shift and learns that a patient she cared for all night has worsened. Her mind goes straight to one verdict: it was my fault, or, on a better day, it was all my skill. The verse would have her slow down. She lists the causes: the patient's own body, the illness, the equipment, the other staff, the hour, what no one could have known. Her own effort is one item among several, and a real one. Seeing it that way lets her ask what she can actually change next time, instead of carrying the whole outcome. Ordinary experience bears this out: people who blame themselves for everything, or credit themselves for everything, often learn little from what happened. The verse does not say her effort counted for nothing, and it does not remove the grief of a bad outcome. It also does not replace the review of care that medicine requires when a patient is harmed.
