Meaning · English

Knowledge, action and the doer are each of just three kinds, distinguished by the three modes of material nature. So they are declared in the philosophy that describes those modes. Listen to them now, exactly as they are.

Krishna has just named the parts of any deed. Now he says each part comes in kinds, and the kinds depend on the gunas. Guna means a strand, as in a rope, and here it means one of the qualities that nature is woven from. Three words carry the verse. Jnana is knowledge, the way a person sees a situation. Karma is action, what actually gets done. Karta is the doer, the one who takes up the work. Krishna says that all three come in exactly three kinds. He also says he is not inventing this. It is how the philosophy that counts and describes the modes already lays it out, and he asks Arjuna to listen to it as it is, without bending it to what he hopes is true. The reason follows from the verses before. Krishna had said that a doer free of the sense of being the doer is not bound. To loosen that grip, Arjuna needs to see what shapes his own seeing, doing and being. Shankara takes the reference as the Sankhya teaching on the gunas, cited as an authority for this sorting. Ramanuja reads the gunas as qualities of nature that bind the self, and says the three vary with them. Madhva stresses that the gunas work under the Lord's control and not on their own. The verse asks only for careful listening.

Sunlight comes through a window fitted with a pane of coloured glass. The same light lands on the floor as amber, green or grey, depending on the pane. Knowledge, action and the doer are the light, and the gunas are the glass. Each kind of pane colours what passes through it, and the colour is easy to mistake for the light itself.

1. Tonight, pick one task you did today, even a small one like cooking or answering a message. Spend two minutes with it. 2. Ask three questions, one at a time. What did I understand about the situation? What exactly did I do? In what mood did I do it? 3. Write one short line for each answer. Do not grade them. Only notice that three separate things were at work. 4. Repeat with a different task tomorrow, and see whether the three answers feel alike or different.

A mother sits with her son at nine in the evening, helping with fractions after a long day. He gets one wrong again, and her jaw tightens. Krishna's sorting gives her three questions to ask. What does she actually understand about why he is stuck? Is she tired and guessing? What is she doing with her voice and her pen? And what kind of person is she being in this minute, calm or hurried, patient or wanting it over? Taken apart this way, the moment loosens. She may see that her reading of his mistake came from her fatigue, and that the sharp tone came from the same place. She can then fix one piece, perhaps by slowing down, without blaming the whole evening or herself. Ordinary experience agrees that tiredness colours what we notice and how we answer. The verse does not promise that the fractions get easier, that her tiredness lifts, or that she will always catch herself in time. It gives her a way of looking, and the looking is only a start.
