Nothing Escapes the Three

Bhagavad Gita 18.40

Meaning · English

No being exists, on earth or even among the gods in the higher realms, that is free from these three modes born of material nature.

Three words carry this. Sattvam here means existence, anything that has being. Prakriti is material nature, the ground from which bodies, minds and moods are made. Guna means a strand or a mode, and Krishna names three of them. The plain sense is sweeping: nothing on earth is free of the three, and neither is anything among the devas in the celestial realms. Even the highest beings sit inside the same weave. Krishna says this right after sorting happiness into types, and the reason becomes clear. If every being is shaped by these modes, then every pleasure, every effort and every kind of knowing carries a mix of them too. No place, rank or lifetime stands outside. The verse closes off a hope: that a better address, a higher post or a heavenly birth would end the pull of the modes. What it asks of Arjuna is honesty about where he stands, so he looks for freedom somewhere other than a change of position. Shankara reads the modes as belonging to the realm of appearance, which the knower of the Self sees through. Ramanuja takes the verse as a plain statement that all bound beings are conditioned by them. Madhva stresses that even the gods remain dependent on the Lord.

Picture a glass of water with ink in it. Carry the glass upstairs, to a rooftop or to a hilltop, and the water is just as colored as it was in the kitchen. The change of place does not remove what is mixed in. Likewise, rising to a higher realm leaves the three modes in the mix.

1. Tonight, pick one thing you want to change about your situation, such as a job, a house or a town. 2. Write down what you hope it will remove, such as worry, restlessness or dullness. 3. Next to each, note one time you felt that same thing in a place you once thought was ideal. 4. Over the next week, when the old mood returns somewhere new, just name it quietly: restless, heavy or calm. Notice that it travels with you.

A man finally gets the promotion he worked six years for, and by the second Friday he is lying awake again, tense about the next target. He had believed the worry belonged to the old post. Krishna's teaching says no seat on earth or in the heavens is free of the three modes, and that changes what he does next. Instead of blaming the office, he asks which pull is at work tonight: restlessness, heaviness or steadiness. Naming it, he can pick one small act that favors steadiness, like a walk after dinner or a fixed bedtime. He also stops expecting the next position to settle him. Ordinary experience confirms part of this: a new circumstance often lifts the mood for a while, and then the old temperament returns. The verse does not promise that he will stop feeling tense, and it does not replace a doctor if the sleeplessness or anxiety lasts. It gives him a truer map of where the trouble comes from.
