Numb Comfort, Start to Finish

Bhagavad Gita 18.39

Meaning · English

Happiness that clouds the self from its beginning to its end, born of sleep, laziness and carelessness, is said to belong to the mode of ignorance.

Three words carry the verse. Sukha is happiness, the feeling of being at ease. Mohana comes from the root for bewilderment, so it means what deludes or dulls. Tamasa means belonging to tamas, the mode of darkness and inertia. Krishna tells Arjuna that one kind of happiness is dull from the first moment to the last. The previous two kinds changed character. One began bitter and ended sweet, the other began sweet and ended bitter. This one never changes. It feels like rest at the start and still leaves the self in a fog at the end. Krishna names its sources: nidra (sleep), alasya (indolence) and pramada (negligence, letting things slide). The comfort comes from not looking and not acting, not from anything gained. The verse describes a mode of happiness, and sleep itself is not condemned. The trouble is happiness that keeps the self confused about itself. Shankara reads mohana as that which covers discernment. Ramanuja takes it as the happiness that belongs to tamas and arises from it. Madhva treats it as the mark of a tamasic temperament. Krishna's reason for naming it is that Arjuna, about to choose, needs to tell a real peace from a mere numbness.

A man pulls a heavy blanket over his head on a cold morning and feels warm and safe. An hour later the room is the same, the day is shorter, and he is groggier. The blanket is the happiness born of sleep and laziness. It soothes without ever clearing the head.

1. Pick one moment today when you feel like drifting: an extra nap, an hour of aimless scrolling, a task you keep postponing. 2. Before you give in, ask whether this will leave you clearer or foggier when it ends. 3. Afterward, spend one minute noticing how you feel, without judging yourself. 4. If it left you foggy, try something small and active next time, such as a ten-minute walk or one postponed task.

A man sleeps until noon on his day off. He lies on the sofa with his phone, dishes pile up in the sink, and his mother's call goes unanswered. It feels like rest. By evening he is heavier, a little ashamed, and no more refreshed. Krishna's teaching begins with that evening feeling. The ease was real, but it blurred things and left the self no clearer. Seen this way, the comfort is judged by its aftermath, not by its first minutes. So he can ask, before the next hour slips away, whether this is rest or only avoidance. Real rest tends to leave a person lighter, and a short walk or one small chore often breaks the haze. Ordinary experience confirms that oversleeping and drifting leave people duller, not fresher. The verse does not promise that effort will feel pleasant at once. Persistent heaviness, constant fatigue or a low mood that will not lift can come from illness, and a doctor is the right person to ask about that. The verse is no substitute for that care.
