Pleasure That Turns Sour
Bhagavad Gita 18.38
Meaning · English
Happiness that comes from the senses meeting their objects, which tastes like nectar at the start and like poison at the end, is said to belong to the mode of passion.
Three words carry it. Sanyoga means a joining together: the eye meets a sight, the tongue meets a taste, and the mind meets what it wanted. Rajasa means belonging to rajas, the restless, grasping drive in a person. Parinama means the ripening, what a thing becomes once it has run its course. Krishna tells Arjuna that happiness which comes only from the senses touching what they crave has a particular shape. It is sweetest at the first touch and sours as it ripens. The reason is that the sweetness lies in the wanting and the first contact, and neither lasts. What follows is the tiredness, the wearing down of body and mind, and the craving for more. Krishna does not call the pleasure unreal. He says what it costs at the end. He asks Arjuna to judge a happiness by how it ends, and not only by how it feels at the start. Shankara reads the poison as lost strength, clarity and health. Ramanuja reads it as a pull that binds a person further to suffering. Madhva reads it as the ordinary lot of the passionate person, whose joys end in sorrow.
A cold sugary drink gulped on a hot afternoon. The first mouthfuls are wonderful. Then the mouth turns sticky, the thirst comes back worse, and the hand reaches for another. The bright start is the sense contact, and the sticky, thirstier end is the ripening.
1. Pick one small pleasure you reach for most days, such as a snack, a scroll or a purchase. 2. Today, notice how you feel in the first minute of it. Write one word. 3. Notice how you feel an hour afterwards. Write one word. 4. Do this on three days this week, then read the six words together before deciding anything.
A woman sits at midnight after a quarrel with her sister, ordering a third pair of shoes on her phone. The first click gives a real lift. The verse would change that moment in small steps. It points her to the ripening and not only the first taste. She might picture the parcel opening, the bill, and the same ache returning. She might put the phone in another room and see whether the urge fades. Ordinary experience agrees that a craving fed in a low mood tends to leave the mood lower afterwards. The verse also asks nothing harsh of her. It says only to look at where the pleasure ends. It does not say the quarrel will heal, or that the sadness will go. If the urge to buy or eat or drink has become hard to control and is hurting her life, a doctor or counsellor is the right person to see.
