Fire Behind the Smoke

Bhagavad Gita 18.48

Meaning · English

Kunti's son, one should not abandon the duty born of one's own nature, even when it has defects. For every undertaking is veiled by fault, as fire is veiled by smoke.

Two words carry the verse. Sahaja means born together with you: the work that fits your own make-up and has been yours from the start. Doṣha means a fault, a flaw, something that spoils. Krishna tells Arjuna that this natural duty is not to be dropped because it has faults. His reason is that no undertaking is free of them. Every action comes wrapped in fault, the way fire comes wrapped in smoke. The smoke is real, and it stings the eyes, but nobody concludes there is no fire. So the search for a flawless task is a search for something that does not exist. Walking away from the duty only trades its flaws for the flaws of another task, or for the flaws of idleness. Arjuna wants to leave his duty because it looks stained. Krishna answers that stain comes with action itself. What he asks of the listener is to stay with the duty and not wait for it to be clean. The commentators read the faults differently. Shankara takes them as the natural mixture in action, to be borne while the work is offered up and the mind is cleansed. Ramanuja says the faults are the pull of the three qualities in all action, and that the work is still to be done as worship. Madhva reads the duty as service to the Lord, which the faults do not undo.

A home kitchen after a good meal. Flour on the floor, a blackened pan, spilled oil, a sink full of vessels. Nobody has ever made bread without making a mess. The mess is the cost of the meal, and it does not mean the cooking was a mistake. Duty is like that: the faults are the mess, and the food still matters.

1. Pick one task you are tempted to put off or drop because it is not clean enough: a chore, a job, a duty to someone. 2. Write down its faults in two or three plain lines. Accept that they are there. 3. Do the task today for ten minutes anyway, with the faults still in it. 4. Afterwards, notice what you did get done. Notice also whether the flaw was as large while you were working as it was while you were avoiding it.

A cook at a roadside stall wakes to a sharp comment about his food from the day before. The smoke, the heat and the long hours already wear on him, and he wonders whether another trade would be cleaner. The verse makes him ask a plainer question: is there any trade without its own smoke? He may list what is truly wrong and mend what can be mended, such as a better flue or a day off. Then he lights the stove, because the work is still his and still feeds people. Ordinary experience bears out that the grass looks greener from a distance, and that the faults of a new job only show up once we are inside it. The verse does not promise that the smoke thins, that the criticism was unfair, or that the work will ever feel easy. It also does not ask anyone to stay in work that is harming their health or safety. For that, a doctor or a trusted person should be consulted, and leaving may be the right step.
