Flawed Own Over Polished Borrowed
Bhagavad Gita 18.47
Meaning · English
Better one's own duty, even done imperfectly, than another's duty done well. Doing the work that accords with one's own nature, a person incurs no sin.
Krishna gives Arjuna a comparison between two kinds of work. Swa-dharma is one's own prescribed duty, the work that belongs to one's own place. Para-dharma is someone else's. Krishna says the first is better even when it is done viguna, with faults, and the second is worse even when it is done well, su-anushthita. The next phrase gives the test: svabhava-niyata karma, work fixed by one's own innate nature. Svabhava means one's own inborn bent, what one is made of. Karma here means the duty itself, the act that falls to a person. The reason comes from the verses before: the text has said that each person reaches perfection through their own work, offered as worship. Borrowed work cannot be offered that way, because it was never one's own. Arjuna is a warrior, shaken by what his duty asks, and tempted by another life. Krishna answers that a person who does the work that fits their nature does not incur kilbisha, sin or fault. The ask is plain: stay in your own work and do not measure it against the shine of another's. Shankara reads the verse as pointing to duty as the means to purify the mind. Ramanuja takes it as work offered to the Lord. Madhva also stresses worship through one's own prescribed work.
A man's own worn pair of shoes, scuffed and patched, still fits his stride across a long road. A friend's fine new pair rubs his heels raw by the first mile. Own duty is the old pair: ugly perhaps, but made to the shape of the foot that must walk.
1. Tonight, write down one task that is clearly yours this week, at home or at work, that you have been putting off because you fear doing it badly. 2. Do it tomorrow for twenty minutes, imperfectly if need be. Do not stop to fix it. 3. When you catch yourself picturing how someone else would do it better, name the thought quietly and return to the task. 4. At the end, notice whether the roughness of the work troubled you less than the comparing did.
A woman has spent years caring for her father at home. Today a cousin visits, a well-paid surgeon, and says she is wasting her life. She feels the old sting: her work is small, clumsy, unseen. The verse would change the moment in steps. First she sees that the cousin's life is another dharma, not a verdict on hers. Then she asks only whether she is doing what is hers to do, not whether she does it with polish. Then she goes back to her father's medicine and meal with her mind less split. Ordinary experience confirms that comparing with someone else drains attention from the task at hand. The limit is plain. Krishna's words do not say that a person must stay forever in a role that harms them, and they do not remove her tiredness, her grief or her need for help. Where her health is failing, a doctor and a shared load matter more than any teaching. The verse speaks only to the weight of envy, and to the quiet freedom of owning one's own work, flaws included.
