Whatever the Heart Loves

Yoga Sutras 1.39

Meaning · English

Or the mind may be steadied by meditating on anything that is dear to it, whatever one favours and chooses.

Three words carry the sutra. Abhimata means what is wished for, favoured, held dear. Dhyana means meditation: attention resting on one object in an unbroken flow. Yatha means 'as' or 'according to', so the object follows the person's own liking. Va, 'or', marks this as one more way in, beside the others Patanjali has given. The plain sense: the mind can also be steadied by meditating on whatever one holds dear. The sutra does not name the object. It leaves the choice to the practitioner. Why say this? The earlier ways name particular things, and a particular thing may leave a given person cold. A mind that finds its object dull will not stay with it. Patanjali's aim stays the same, a mind held still, and here he lets affection do the holding. Vyasa, the oldest commentator, reads it this way: the mind that becomes steady on a chosen object of liking then grows steady on other things as well. Later commentators generally add that the chosen object should be a wholesome one.

A child who squirms through every lesson can sit for an hour over a favourite picture book, quiet and unforced. The attention was never missing. It only needed something it already leaned toward. The sutra puts that leaning to work as the object of meditation.

1. Choose one wholesome thing you already love: a lamp flame, a line of verse, a hill you know, a name that comforts you. 2. Once today, sit for five minutes with it in front of you or held in mind. 3. Each time the mind drifts, notice where it went, then return to the object without scolding. 4. Afterward, note whether staying with it felt different from staying with something chosen only from duty.
