Meaning · English
Or the mind may take as its support the knowledge that comes in dream and in sleep.
Three words carry the sutra. Svapna is dream. Nidra is sleep, the deep kind with no dream in it. Jnana is knowing, an awareness of something. Alambana is a support, a thing the mind leans on, from a root meaning to hang from or hold onto. So the sutra reads: the mind can rest on what it knew in dreaming and in sleep. Every word is accounted for. The small word va, 'or', marks this as one more option in a list. Patanjali is answering a plain problem. The mind will not stay still without something to hold, and the verses just before offer other supports. This one is drawn from ordinary life, since everyone dreams and sleeps. Dreams show the mind making a whole world with no outer object. Deep sleep shows a mind at rest, with a quiet remembered afterward. Vyasa's Bhashya takes it as meditation on the knowledge of dream, or on the calm clarity of sleep, made the object of the mind. Later commentators differ mainly on whether the dream or the sleep is the point, and on how the sleep-state is to be held in mind. The sutra itself does not settle that.
Think of a lamp left on in a quiet house after everyone has gone to bed. The rooms are not busy, yet something small stays lit. The memory of a dream or of deep sleep is like that lamp: a gentle light the mind can keep its gaze on once the day's noise has stopped.
1. Tonight, lie down a few minutes before you mean to sleep and put the phone away. 2. In the morning, before you rise, stay still for one minute and recall any dream, or simply how restful the night felt. 3. Hold that memory lightly, as a single thing to look at. When thoughts of the day push in, return to it. 4. Notice how the mind behaves when it has one quiet thing to rest on.
