Meaning · English
Or the mind, taking as its object one who is free of craving, grows steady.
Three words carry this sutra. Citta is the mind-field, where thoughts and wants rise. Vishaya is an object, whatever the mind is fixed upon. Vitaraga is made of vita, gone, and raga, the colouring of desire, the pull that makes the mind cling to what it likes. So vitaraga means free of that pull. The plain sense: the mind can be steadied by taking as its object someone, or some state of mind, in which craving has dropped away. The mind does not look at a thing and want it. It looks at wantlessness itself, and takes on its quality. Patanjali says this because the trouble he has named is that the mind keeps turning toward objects of desire. The sutras just before offer steadiness through an object held with persistence, and through a joyful, radiant spirit. This is another such object, and a fitting one, since it is the opposite of what scatters the mind. Vyasa's Bhashya, the oldest commentary, reads it as the mind resting on the mind of a person who has gone beyond passion, and so becoming steady. Some later readers take it as the practitioner's own mind made free of craving. The commentators agree that raga is what is set aside.
Two people walk down a road. One is hurried and keeps glancing at shop windows. The other walks evenly and looks at nothing in particular. After a while the hurried one's pace slackens to match. The mind likewise falls into step with what it keeps beside it: an unclinging mind lends its evenness.
1. Tonight, pick one person you know, or have read about, who seems at ease about wanting: not grasping, not bitter when refused. 2. Sit for five minutes and hold that person in mind. Recall how they speak, how they stand, how they take a no. 3. Notice, without forcing anything, what your own mind does while it stays with them. 4. Once tomorrow, catch one small moment of craving, such as a snack or a notification, and name it as craving.
