The verse and its meaning · Yoga Sutras · Nine Ways to Still the Mind
Sorrowless Inner Light
Yoga Sutras 1.36
Meaning · English
Or a state that is free of sorrow and full of light brings the mind to steadiness.
Two words carry the sutra. Viśokā is a-śoka: without sorrow, without grief. Jyotiṣmatī is jyotis, light, with the ending -matī, possessing. So it means "having light", luminous. The small word vā means "or". Patanjali is offering one more door, not correcting the earlier ones. The plain sense: the mind can be steadied by resting on an inner state that is bright and carries no grief. The sutra names the quality and leaves out any method of reaching it. Sorrow is one of the things that scatters attention, pulling it back to what hurts. A state with no sorrow in it gives the mind nothing to be pulled toward, so it can stay. Vyasa's Bhashya, the oldest commentary, reads this as a steady inner perception of light, which he places in the heart. He treats it as a way the mind gains a firm footing. Later commentators differ on what the light is held to be, and on whether it is bound to the heart or to the sense of "I am". The commentators agree that it is a settled, shining state and not a passing mood.
A child who wakes frightened in a dark room cannot settle until a small lamp is lit. Once it burns, the eyes rest on the flame and the shadows stop mattering. The lamp is the sorrowless light, and the child's eyes are the attention that finally has somewhere calm to stay.
1. Tonight, sit for three minutes in a quiet spot and bring to mind a moment when you felt clear and free of worry, even a brief one. 2. Hold the memory the way you would hold a lit candle in view. Notice where in the body it seems to sit. 3. When a worry arrives, note it, and return to that spot of brightness. 4. Afterward, notice whether your attention stayed in one place a little longer than usual.
