Dattatreya Explains World as Consciousness to Parasurama

Tripura Rahasya 11.1

The story · English

Parasurama, the Bhargava, had just heard the astonishing tale of Hemachuda. Something in him was not settled, and he began to ask. 'Blessed teacher, the knowledge you have given me is wonderful, but to me it seems hard, even impossible from every side. How can this visible world be nothing but consciousness? No one has seen it so. It can only be accepted on faith, and in no other way. Consciousness that is free of every object can never be experienced by anyone. It does not hold together at all, so how could the mind take it in? Please teach me with your kindness, and teach me fully.' Asked this way, Dattatreya, his teacher, turned to Parasurama and began to answer.

'Listen, Rama,' said Dattatreya. 'I will tell you what the seen world truly is. All of it is only the seeing, and nothing else. Here is the reasoning, so listen with a steady mind. This world is an effect, because we find it arising. Arising means a fresh appearance in every moment, and the world shows itself as new. Some say the whole world springs up in a single indivisible moment. Others say it is a gathering of things, moving and unmoving. Either way, it arises. To say it simply happens by its own nature fails, for it proves too much. We know causes by their presence and absence. How could such order come by chance? Where a cause is not seen, we suppose an unseen one, or ordinary life would break down. So everything has a cause.'

'Some say this effect arose from atoms that are like nothing. But if the effect is wholly different from them, it would be nothing too. The real and the unreal cannot be one. Yellow cannot be not-yellow, nor light be darkness, for then everything would blur together. Or does it come from the will of God? Then how does the first action begin? Others say the world comes from nature, a balance of qualities. That cannot hold either. We would have to find what disturbs the balance, and nothing explains the balance itself. No conscious being oversees it, and there is no example anywhere. So by ordinary perception, no cause of the world is found. For what cannot be seen, scripture is the root. Other means of knowing fail us, since those who judge are not complete and their proofs are never settled.'

'Since the world has a maker, he must be conscious. But the maker of something beyond thought cannot be ordinary. He has power beyond thought, and scripture reflects him. For the one who is full, it is a proof nothing blocks. Scripture speaks of one, Maheshana, before creation. He was free and needed no material, by the greatness of his freedom. On the wall of his own self he made the world appear like a picture, for play. It was like a dream or a daydream that you make alone. In a dream you take the dream body as I. In the same way he holds this world. Your true form is not the body, as dreaming shows. So the world is not his body either, for it dissolves. You are consciousness apart from the body, and he is the one consciousness, empty of world, unchanging. Where else could he show the picture? Nothing exists apart from consciousness, so consciousness is supreme.'

'Waves are nothing without the ocean, and rays are nothing without the sun. In the same way there is no world without awareness. So this great God, pure consciousness itself, existed before creation. From him the world arose, in him it stays, and into him it dissolves at the end. Scripture states this, and it does not contradict itself. On things we cannot see, scripture is our proof because it agrees with what we can see. We see the powers of jewels and mantras everywhere, though the dull-minded cannot grasp them. So scripture, spoken by the all-knowing, says that God alone existed at the beginning. He made the whole world without material, for he is full, pure and free. The world does not stand outside him, for being full, he has no other place. It is like a reflection in a mirror.'

'Like a yogi, the God acts for the sake of the world, and his creation is like a city of imagination. Rama, your own mental creation is the same. It is made of mind alone, yet it appears crowded with many mothers, knowers and things known. However divided it seems, nothing is ever apart from mind. It rises in the mind, stays there, and dissolves there. In the same way, that consciousness is Tripura, the unity of endless powers, the witness of everything. It is full everywhere, because nothing limits it.'

'Time and place are said to set limits in this world. Place is made of form, and time is made of action. But form and action both depend on consciousness. So tell me, how could they limit it? Tell me in what place or time consciousness is not. And a place without consciousness, how could it be known at all? The existence of things is only their being lit up. That light is consciousness, and nothing shines without it. Inert things do not shine by themselves. They shine through their contact with consciousness. But consciousness shines in itself, with no need of anything else. Things shine by leaning on it, and in no other way.'

'Suppose things exist even without being lit. Then listen. In this world the difference between is and is not could never be settled. So the existence of things is only the light of consciousness, and nothing else. A reflection has its being in the mirror alone. In the same way the world's being is consciousness, and so everything is consciousness. Whatever shines more does so by greater clearness. A reflection appears by hardness and by clearness, and by their degree it is sharp or faint. This is plain in a mirror and in water. The mirror is inert and has no freedom of its own.'
