Dattatreya Teaches Parasurama: World as Reflection
Tripura Rahasya 11.57
The story · English
Dattatreya was speaking to Parasurama, and he began with a mirror. A mirror needs something to reflect, he said, yet awareness is different. It is free and clear by its own nature, and it needs nothing outside itself. Its purity is not something it earns. It simply has no stain to lose. What we call a stain is only variety, many flavors showing up at once. That variety is not dirt on awareness, because awareness is one self, whole and undivided. Being full in itself, it is purer than anything else could be. Whatever shines without a light of its own shines only by borrowing, through its link to something else.
Those who understand reflections, Dattatreya said, call this world a reflection, and everyone has seen it for what it is. Nothing here shines by itself. It shines because it rests on awareness, so the world is just like an image in a mirror. Awareness can be colored by all sorts of other things and still never leaves its own nature, not even a little, just as a mirror stays a mirror. Images are never apart from their mirror, and the reflected world is never apart from the self of awareness. Then he asked Parasurama to look inward. Through its own will, things appear reflected in the self, with no original behind them and nothing made from anything.
That will, he explained, is the freedom of awareness, a kind of swelling. When there is no will, awareness is simply clear and of one form. Long before creation it was like that. Then a great freedom arose, made only of will, and from it this reflected world appeared. Because that will was so steady, the world has lasted a long time. It looks shared and common because the freedom behind it is complete. For others, whose freedom is partial, things look private. Dattatreya added that as someone practices, with jewels, mantras and other means, and drops the narrowness inside, the appearing changes to match. He pointed to a magician who shows a whole world of pictures from will alone, with no material, and then draws it back.
So a yogi's creation can be made steady, shared and useful, then gathered back into the self. Dattatreya asked Parasurama to see how a yogi's world seems outside only because the yogi is limited. For the lord of awareness, who is without limit, creation lies wholly within. Anything apart from awareness is unreal, as a reflection is unreal without its mirror. This is why careful inquiry dissolves the world's reality, and nothing else does. What is true never lets go of its own nature, and what is false can be dropped. Parasurama, he said, look at how restless the world is by nature. True and false show up side by side, like a reflection and its mirror. The mirror is still and the image moves. In the same way the world moves, while awareness stays still and holds everything.
So things cannot stand up to inquiry. Sunlight shows objects to us, yet to owls and others blind by day it is like darkness. Light and dark are not clearly separate. A poison harms one creature and not another. A human fears what yogis and guhyakas do not. Long stretches of time and distance, shaped by human minds, turn around for gods and yogis. Distance in a mirror is only an appearance of distance. In the same way nothing's own nature holds firm under inquiry. Without its support, nothing is anything at all. Whatever seems to be, that is only awareness, the supreme Lord. Dattatreya finished by telling Parasurama that he had now explained how the world has one self, and that self is awareness.
