Tangana's Son Frees Princes for Mahasena

Tripura Rahasya 12.1

The story · English

Bhargava had listened to Dattatreya explain the nature of the world, and still a doubt clung to him. He said, "Lord, I have heard what you taught, and it is exactly as you say. Yet why does the world always seem real? Why do other wise people take it to be real? Even after hearing you, it still looks real to me. Please tell me, so that this confusion can end." Dattatreya, the great-hearted, began to explain where the mistake begins. "Listen, Rama. The root is old. It is a firm idea, held on top of not knowing what one is."

"Look at it," Dattatreya said. "People do not know the Self, so they take the body to be themselves. What have flesh, blood and bone to do with the spotless Self, which is pure awareness? Only because the idea was held so firmly did awareness come to feel like a body. Even after the Self is known, the body-idea can return. In the same way, the world looks real because we hold it so. Hold the opposite idea, and the firm confusion falls away. However one holds this world, so it becomes for that person. See how yogis, through concentration and meditation, become one with what they hold. Now I will tell you an old and wonderful story."

"In Vanga there is a very holy city called Sundara. A wise king named Sushena ruled there, and his younger brother Mahasena was always devoted to him. Sushena governed by justice and was loved by all. Once he worshipped the god Maheswara with horse sacrifices. The princes, mighty and brave, followed the sacrificial horse with a great army. They overcame all who tried to stop it, and the king's sons came to the bank of the Airavati. There they saw a royal sage, Tangana, rich in austerity. Proud of their strength, they ignored him and rode past without approaching him."

Tangana's son saw this, and he was angry at the insult to his father. Scolding the princes, he seized the sacrificial horse. The princes surrounded him on every side. But the sage's son took the horse and walked into a great boulder that stood before them. As the princes watched, he and the horse vanished into the stone. They struck the rock apart with weapons of every kind. Out of the crushed boulder came Tangana's son, with a great army around him. In a moment he defeated them, destroyed Sushena's forces, and bound the princes. Then he went back into the boulder. The surviving soldiers hurried to the king and told him everything.

Sushena was astonished. He said to his younger brother, "Go quickly, dear Mahasena, to where the sage Tangana lives. Ascetics have unthinkable power, and neither gods nor men can defeat them. Win him over, and come back swiftly with my sons and the horse. The spring, the season for the sacrifice, must not pass. Never be proud before ascetics. If angered, they can burn the worlds to ash in a moment. So be humble, and gain your purpose." Mahasena went at once. There he found Tangana, steady and absorbed, still as a wooden post, his senses and mind at peace, his Self sunk in an ocean beyond thought.

Mahasena bowed to the ground like a falling staff, folded his hands, and praised the lord of sages with many hymns. Three days passed as he praised him. Then the sage's son came, pleased with the praise given to his father. He said, "King, I am pleased. Tell me what you want, and I will do it without delay. I am the son of the great sage Tangana. My father cannot speak to you now. He is deep in meditation. After twelve years he will rise, and five of those years have passed, with seven left. Do not think me a child. I am an ascetic, equal to my father. Nothing is impossible for yogis."

Mahasena, who was wise, bowed again with folded hands. "Son of the sage, if you truly want to please me, then I wish to talk with your father when he rises from his meditation. If you take pity on me, do this quickly." The sage's son answered, "King, what you ask can hardly be done. Yet I have promised, so I will not go back on it. Wait a little, and see the power that comes from yoga." He said that his father rested in a most holy peace, and no outward effort could wake him. "But I will wake him by a subtle skill of yoga." Then he drew in his senses, joined the lower breath to the breath of life, and went out by the chief breath. He entered his father's body, found the mind there dissolved, and stirred it awake. He drew it up, came out, and returned to his own body. The moment he did, the sage woke.

Tangana saw the king in front of him, bowing and praising him. He wondered what this was, and then understood everything through yogic sight. Calm and glad, he called his son and said, "Child, do not do this again. Anger is the enemy of austerity. When a king guards the world, austerity grows without hindrance. Hindering a sacrifice is the way of demons, never of a sage. Give back the horse and the princes gladly, and let him go quickly so the sacrifice is not late." His son entered the boulder and in a moment returned the horse and the princes with joy, his anger gone. Mahasena sent his nephews back to the city, bowed to Tangana, and, deeply amazed, asked: "Lord, how were my nephews and the horse inside the rock?" Tangana said, "Listen, king. Long ago I was a ruler, and I governed the earth to its ocean shores for a long time. By Mahadeva's grace I came to know Tripura, the sovereign power of awareness, and I began to see the world as dry and empty."
