The Sage's Son Shows King Mahasena His Universe
Tripura Rahasya 12.56
The story · English
The sage tells the king how he came to live in this forest. Weary of the ways of the world, he gave his kingdom to his sons and walked into the woods. His faithful wife followed him. Countless years went by while he practised his austerity, and she, serving him, reached a high attainment of her own. Then one day, because of something that was bound to happen, her mind turned to desire while she was deep in meditation. She saw him sitting there, steady and still within, and she could not bear the force of her longing. So she held him in her thoughts with all her heart.
That deep and steady thought was enough. She conceived, and she bore the son who now stands before them. She laid the child in the sage's lap and woke him from his meditation. Then she gave her body back to the elements and passed into the highest space. The sage looked down at the boy in his lap and understood where she had gone. Compassion filled him, and he raised the child himself. Later the boy heard of the kingdom his father had once ruled, and he longed to rule. He asked his father for help. By his father's teaching he gained great yogic power.
Through the power of his meditation, he made a whole world inside this great rock. Now he rules the earth, ringed by oceans, and he rules it always. In that world the king's horse and his sons, who had been held fast, were set free. The sage ends, saying, "That is how your sons came to be held in the stone." The king listened, amazed, and asked again. "What you have told me is a great wonder. I want to see that world. Please show it to me." The sage turned to his son and said, "Show him your world, child, all of it, as he wishes." Then he went back into his meditation.
The sage's son came to the king, and they went toward the great rock. The boy slipped inside. The king could not follow, though he called out to the sage's son, and from within the stone the boy called back to him. Then the boy came out again and spoke. "King, you cannot enter my world, because you do not know yoga. For lack of yoga, this rock has become dense and hard to pass. But I must take you, out of respect for my father's word. Leave your body here in this hollow, covered with grass, and enter the rock with me in a body made only of mind."
The king answered, "I cannot leave my body. How would I let it go, sage? If I force it out, I will surely die." The sage's son laughed. "You know nothing of yoga. Just close your eyes." The king closed them. In half a blink the boy entered him, drew out his subtle body, and threw the king's own body into a pit. By his yogic power he entered the rock with the king. There he joined the king to a body formed from his own thought and woke him. The king opened his eyes and found himself held by the sage's son in a vast sky. Above, below and all around lay a huge, endless emptiness.
Afraid, the king cried out, "Do not leave me. If you let go, I will fall with nothing beneath me." The boy smiled. "Put aside your fear, king. I will not let go. Look at this world inside the rock, and look with courage." Steadied, the king looked. Far below lay stars wrapped in darkness. He passed the moon's cold disc, and the boy kept him safe there. He passed the sun's heat, and the boy cooled his body. He saw the world of heaven, then stood on the golden mountain's peak, and saw the ring of mountains at the world's edge, the dark beyond, the golden earth, seven oceans and seven continents, with Indra and the gods, demons, people, rakshasas, yakshas and kinnaras. In the highest world he saw the sage's son himself, divided as Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva. On earth he saw him again, in another form, ruling as emperor. The king stood amazed. The boy said, "King, while you were looking, a great span of time has gone by. Twelve hundred million years have passed here, and only one day outside. Let us go back to the world where my father waits." So the boy rose into the sky with the king, came out of the rock as before, and stood outside.
