Even Seeing in Breath
Shiva Sutras 3.22
Meaning · English
While the breath moves, the seeing stays the same.
Three words carry the sutra. Prana is breath. Samacara joins sam, meaning even or together, with cara, moving: the breath going its way evenly. Darsana is seeing, so samadarsana is an even seeing, the same sight whatever arrives. Put plainly, the sutra teaches that while the breath moves, the seeing does not change. The breath is not made longer or shorter, and nothing is held. The text picks the breath because it is always close and always changing, rising and falling, and the same awareness watches each part of it. The sutras before it speak of the fourth state being poured through the other states and of entering with one's own mind. Here the way in is something near at hand. It belongs to the anava way, the way of small means, where a bodily act taken up with effort is the doorway. Bhaskara's Varttika adds a detail: the breath moves gently, a little outward and slowly, and the one who practises then sees evenly in every state, resting in turya. Turya is the fourth state, beyond waking, dream and deep sleep. The commentators agree that the evenness of the seeing, not the breath itself, is the point.
1. Sit where you will not be moved, with the body settled and the eyes soft. 2. Let the breath move as it already does. Do not lengthen it or change it. 3. Notice the whole movement, in and out, and the one who notices it. The noticing is the same at each part. 4. When the mind wanders, see that it wandered, and come back to the breath moving. 5. Stop when the time you set is over, and let the even seeing stay a moment.
