Diving In With Your Own Mind

Shiva Sutras 3.21

Meaning · English

Immersed, through his own mind, he should enter.

Four words. Magna comes from a root for diving or sinking, so it means one who has gone under, as into water. Sva is own. Citta is the mind: the ordinary working mind that thinks, remembers and pays attention. Pravishet comes from the root for entering and means let him enter. Put plainly: having gone under, by means of his own mind, he enters. No outside tool is named. The mind that usually carries him about is what he goes in with. This belongs to the anava way, the way of small means, where a person starts from the mind he already has. Shambhava and shakta are the other two ways. After the sutras on the mothers of the letters and on the pouring of the fourth over the other three, the teaching turns practical: sink, and go in. The sutra does not say what is entered. Bhaskara's Varttika says it is turya, the fourth state beneath waking, dreaming and deep sleep. He adds that coarse supports such as breath-control are left behind, so that the sense of being a body dissolves in the dive. The commentators agree that the mind is not thrown away. It is turned inward and used.

1. Sit where you will not be disturbed for the length of the sit. 2. Rest the mind on its own awareness, with no tool and no count. 3. Let it sink, the way a swimmer goes under instead of watching from the bank. 4. When it wanders, notice that, and sink again with the same mind. 5. Stay inside what you have entered. Stop when the time is up.
