Oil Poured Over Three
Shiva Sutras 3.20
Meaning · English
Over the three, the fourth is to be poured, as oil is poured.
Four words carry it. Tri is three: waking, dreaming and deep sleep, the states every person passes through. Caturtha is the fourth. This is turya, the ground of awareness that is present in all three and is not one of them. Taila is oil. Asecya means to be poured over, to be made to soak in. The sutra teaches that the fourth is not reached by leaving the three. It is poured over them, the way oil spreads through cloth, slowly and to every thread. The oil does not replace the cloth. It reaches the whole of it. This follows from the earlier sutras, where the three states are shown to be held in something wider. Here that wider thing is applied. The method belongs to anava, the way of the small self, which works through the means a person already has: the seat, the breath and the senses. It is less direct than shambhava, which needs no means, and shakta, which works through the mind's own power. Kshemaraja's Vimarshini takes the fourth as the state to be spread through the other three. Bhaskara's Varttika adds that it should wet even the middle stretches of each state, not only the start and end.
1. Sit where you will not be moved for ten minutes. Let the breath go on as it is. 2. Notice that you are aware. Sight, sound and the touch of the seat are all being known. 3. Let that knowing spread slowly, like oil into cloth, through each sense in turn, then through the breath. 4. When the mind wanders, notice that too. Let the knowing soak into the wandering and begin again. 5. When the time is up, stop. Take the same soaking into whatever you do next.
