Mothers of the Bound
Shiva Sutras 3.19
Meaning · English
In the groups of letters beginning with ka dwell the Mothers beginning with Maheshvari, mothers of the bound.
Three words carry it. Varga is a row of letters: ka, kha, ga and so on, the consonants sorted by where in the mouth they are spoken. Matrika is the whole alphabet seen as a mother, since every word is born from letters. Pashu is the bound one, a tethered animal, here a person held by limits. The sutra says that over these rows of letters stand Mothers, Maheshvari first, and that they are mothers of the bound. A word names a thing before the person has met it, and the naming becomes the person's whole world. That is how they hold him. Shiva teaches this after 3.18, where knowing that is not lost ends rebirth: knowing can be lost, and the loss comes through speech. It belongs to anava, the way of small means, which works with letters, breath and the senses. Kshemaraja's Vimarshini takes the Mothers as the powers of speech, which veil a person's own nature while he is bound and free him once he knows them. Bhaskara adds that even someone who has attained can be deluded again if he grows careless, so he must stay watchful in every state.
Jars in a kitchen, each with a handwritten label. After a while you stop smelling or tasting and just read the label: cumin, salt, tea. The label has taken the place of the thing. Letters work like those labels, and the Mothers are the habit of reading them instead of meeting what they name.
1. Sit for three minutes this morning, on a chair or the floor, and follow your breath without changing it. 2. When a thought arrives, notice whether it comes as words, and which word came first. 3. Later, look at one ordinary object, a cup or a window, for half a minute before you name it. Notice the small gap before the name arrives. 4. Before sleep, recall one moment when a word decided your mood before the thing itself did.
