Meaning · English
Heavy, cold, soft, unctuous, sweet, steady and slippery: these qualities of kapha are brought to calm by qualities that are their opposites.
In Ayurveda's wider teaching, kapha is what holds the body together: its bulk, its moisture, its steadiness. This verse gives only its qualities: Charaka lists seven by which it shows itself. Heavy, guru. Cold, shita. Soft, mridu. Oily or unctuous, snigdha. Sweet, madhura. Steady, sthira. Slippery and clinging, picchila. Then a single rule: each of these settles when met by its opposite. The verse gives no reason. An earlier passage of Charaka, not this verse, teaches that like increases like, so a heavy, cold, sweet day builds kapha further, and what is light, warm, firm, dry, sharp-tasting, moving and clear lightens it. Other passages of Charaka, not this verse, explain that the pungent, bitter and astringent tastes stand against sweetness. Kapha is not a fault; it is steadiness and strength. Only when it gathers past its measure does it need calming. For a life, this means noticing the qualities of food, weather, sleep and movement, and leaning the other way when heaviness piles up. Lightening by fasting or drying foods does not suit someone ill, pregnant, old or very young.
In winter a jar of ghee thickens on the kitchen shelf: pale, heavy, clinging to the spoon. Stand it near the warm stove for a while and it loosens, clears and pours. Nothing was added or taken away; warmth simply met cold. That is the rule at work: kapha's heavy, cold, sticky qualities give way when their opposite is brought close.
Modern physiology has no kapha. The nearest things are the body's structure and fluids: tissue, fat stores, the mucus that lines and protects, and a steady, unhurried temperament. Some of the pairs still make sense to a family doctor. Large, rich, sweet meals are dense in energy and often leave people drowsy afterwards. Regular movement lifts sluggishness and helps the body use stored fuel. Warm drinks can feel easier than cold ones when the nose and chest are congested, though that is comfort rather than cure. Where the old system goes further, sorting every food and season into heavy or light, oily or dry, and treating those qualities as forces that cancel each other, there is no modern measure for them. It reads best as a careful vocabulary for how a body feels.
