Mountains, Sea and Open Arms

Rig Veda 10.121.4

Meaning · English

By his greatness these snowy mountains are his; the sea and the Rasa, they say, are his; these directions are his arms. To which god shall we offer?

The singer points to what anyone can see: snow ranges, the sea, the open spread of the directions. All of it belongs to one being and shows his greatness. The snowy mountains, Sāyaṇa says, stand for every mountain. The Rasa is a river named beside the sea; Sāyaṇa takes it as all rivers running down to all seas. The directions, the four quarters and the corners between, reach out like his arms. Still the refrain holds back his name and asks which god receives the offering.

A farmer stands on his porch with a visitor and sweeps one arm from the ridge to the tree line: all of that. He does not list the fields; the gesture carries them. The singer makes the same sweep across mountains, sea and sky, except the owner never appears. Only the land is shown.
