King of Two Feet and Four
Rig Veda 10.121.3
Meaning · English
By his greatness he alone became king of all that moves, that breathes and blinks; he rules the two-footed and four-footed. To which god shall we offer?
The world is pictured by its signs of life: things that move, that draw breath, that blink their eyes. Over all of it stands one king, made king by his own greatness rather than by anyone's choosing. 'Two-footed' and 'four-footed' cover people and animals. Sāyaṇa gives humans for the first and cows and horses for the second. The closing line repeats the hymn's question. Sāyaṇa takes the offering here to be the worshipper's own heart and self, not just the gift poured out.
Picture a village well at dusk. Farmers lower their buckets, and the bullocks and goats crowd the trough beside it. On two legs and on four, they all drink the same water, and none of them owns it. The verse sees every breathing, blinking creature standing that way, under one king whose greatness holds them all.
