Shadow of Life and Death
Rig Veda 10.121.2
Meaning · English
He gives the self and gives strength; all beings and the gods heed his command. Deathlessness and death are his shadow. To which god shall we offer our oblation?
The one being praised gives two things: the self, the life inside each creature, and the strength to use it. Sāyaṇa reads 'giver of the self' as the source every self comes from; he also allows 'the one who makes selves clean.' Every living thing, and the gods themselves, live under his command. Then the hard line: deathlessness and death both fall from him like a shadow. Neither is his rival; both belong to him. The refrain asks again which god should receive the offering.
A tree at noon throws a pool of cool shade; at dusk the same tree stretches a long dark shape across the path. The tree does not change; only what it casts does. Deathlessness and death sit in that place: not powers standing beside the one god, but what falls from him.
