The First Lord of All

Rig Veda 10.121.1

Meaning · English

At first the Golden Germ came forth. Once born, he alone was lord of all that is. He holds earth and this sky. To which god shall we offer?

Hiranyagarbha is a name. It means the golden germ, the life inside a golden egg before any world existed. Sāyaṇa reads him as Prajapati, lord of creatures. He arose before everything else, and from the moment of his birth he alone ruled all that would come to be. He holds earth and sky in their places. The closing question is asked and left unanswered. Sāyaṇa takes its word 'who' as itself a name for Prajapati, the one whose nature cannot be pinned down.

A single pole stands in the centre of a tent. It holds the canvas up and keeps it off the ground. Pull it out and roof and floor fall onto each other. The hymn pictures its first being the same way: one support standing between earth and sky, keeping each in its place.
