Meaning · English
Held firm by his care, the two crying worlds look to him in mind, trembling. On him the risen sun shines. To which god shall we bring our offering?
The two worlds, sky and earth, are called 'the criers.' Sāyaṇa links the name to an old story that the Creator wept as he made them. They stand only because he braced them, to keep the world safe. In their own minds they turn toward him and see that their greatness comes from him. Most readers take one word as 'trembling'; Sāyaṇa reads it as 'shining.' Even the sunrise happens upon him as its ground. The seer still gives him no name and asks again whom to honour.
A toddler who has just been stood on her feet wobbles, and her eyes go straight to the hands that set her there. She is standing, and she is also shaking. Heaven and earth are pictured the same way: braced firm, still quivering, their whole attention turned toward the one who steadied them.
