The Waters and the Seed
Rig Veda 10.121.7
Meaning · English
When the great waters came, spreading over all, carrying the seed and bearing Agni, the one breath of the gods arose from them. To which god shall we offer?
At the start there were waters, vast and spread through everything. They carried a seed, which Sāyaṇa reads as Prajapati, the creator, lying inside the golden egg. They brought forth Agni, the fire, and Sāyaṇa takes fire as standing for everything that followed: space, air, earth. From those waters came one breath, the life shared by the gods and every living thing. In another reading he names that breath as wind. The refrain then asks again which god receives the offering.
Picture a scan at an early pregnancy check: dark fluid fills the screen, and inside it a small shape with one quick flicker, the first heartbeat. Nothing yet looks like a person, but life is already there and moving. The hymn sees the world the same way: waters holding a seed, and from them one beating breath for all.
