One God Above the Gods

Rig Veda 10.121.8

Meaning · English

He who in his greatness gazed across the waters that held strength and were bringing sacrifice to birth, who alone was god above the gods: to which god shall we bring our offering?

Before anything had shape, there were only the waters. They carried strength, the power to make and to grow, and they were bringing sacrifice to birth. Sāyaṇa reads that strength as the creator himself, held inside the waters and ready to grow into the world, and the sacrifice as the whole world that sacrifice stands for. One being looked across all of it by his own greatness. He was one, with no second, a god even over the gods. The refrain asks his name, and keeps asking.

A parent stands in the doorway of a dark room where several children are asleep. Each small body already holds the strength of the adult it will become. One look from the doorway takes them all in. So the One looks over the waters, each heavy with a world not yet born, and stands apart as the watcher.
