Do Us No Harm

Rig Veda 10.121.9

Meaning · English

May he not harm us, who fathered the earth, who, true in his law, made heaven, and made the vast, bright waters. To which god shall we bring our offering?

It begins with a plea for safety: may he not harm us. Then it names him only by what he has made. He fathered the earth. He is true in his law, so what holds the world steady in him does not give way. He brought forth heaven, which Sāyaṇa takes to stand for all the worlds. He brought forth the waters, vast and bright, and Sāyaṇa hears that brightness as gladdening. Still no name is given, so the question closes the verse again.

Picture a family asleep under a roof built by a carpenter none of them ever met. Every beam, wall and floor is his work. Their safety rests on his care. The prayer stands in that place: those who live on the earth and under the sky ask the one who made both not to let it fall on them.
