Naming Prajapati at Last

Rig Veda 10.121.10

Meaning · English

Prajapati, none but you embraces all these born things. Whatever we desire as we offer to you, let it be ours. May we be lords of riches.

Prajapati means lord of creatures. The hymn has asked again and again which god deserves the offering, and now it finally speaks a name. The claim is that he alone surrounds and holds everything that has been born. Sāyaṇa reads this as grasping them all, so that only he could have brought them forth. Then the singers say openly that they come wanting something. Whatever they hoped for when they made the offering, they ask that it come to them. Their last wish is to be masters of wealth.

A hen settles over her chicks with her wings spread wide. Every small body is tucked beneath her and none is left outside. That is the shape of the claim about Prajapati: everything born sits within his reach and nothing lies beyond it. Because nothing is outside him, he is the one the singers bring their request to.
