The Sprout in the Seed
Dakshinamurti Stotram 2
Meaning · English
Like a sprout in a seed, the world lay undivided before blooming into space and time. Like a magician or yogi, he unfolds it at will. Homage to Dakshinamurti, the guru.
At first the world is undivided, all of it held together with nothing yet set apart, the way a sprout sits unseen inside a seed. Then it spreads out. What makes it look so many-colored is the marking-off of here and there, before and after, and that marking-off is shaped by illusion. The one who spreads it out does so by his own will, like a magician raising a show or a great yogi calling up forms. The hymn bows to him as the guru.
Picture a rolled-up rug. Every flower and border of its pattern is already in it, but none of it can be seen. Unroll it across the floor and the pattern lays itself out, this part here, that part there. The world before space and time is the rolled rug; the unrolling is what spreads it into many things.
